A standard single-stage residential condenser runs roughly 72 to 78 decibels at one metre. That's not background hum — it's a steady mechanical drone sitting right outside the glass for most of the year.

A condenser makes two kinds of noise, and they behave differently. The fan is higher-frequency, and that part drops well through an acrylic panel. The compressor is a lower, narrow-band mechanical hum, and that one partly persists — reduced, not gone. And there's a third thing to be honest about: if the unit is bolted to a shared wall or a slab that carries vibration into your home's structure, that's travelling through the building, not through your window, and no window treatment fixes it. Where the noise is airborne — coming across the yard and through the glass, which is the usual case — an insert takes a real bite out of it, up to about 70% of what comes through the window.
The one noise you can fix
without anyone's permission.
Most outdoor noise is somebody else's to fix, or the city's to enforce. A neighbor's condenser is different: it's on their property, running their house, and you have no say over where they put it or when it runs. You could ask them to move it, but that's their call and their money. Treating your own window is the only fix entirely in your hands — nothing to negotiate, nobody to wait on.

Will it stop the hum I feel through the wall?
